The Aaron Academy Summer Arts Program is open to all middle and high school students looking for a unique, challenging, and creative artistic experience. Prominent working artists, authors, illustrators, musicians, actors, producers, and composers lead small classes with support from Aaron Academy teaching staff.
Students utilize the specialized facilities at Aaron Academy, including the theater, dance studio, library media center, art labs, and state of the art technology. Students also take advantage of the vast resources of New York City and participate in weekly field experiences.
The Aaron Academy Summer Arts Program balances academic and creative growth with opportunities for building lasting friendships.

Session 1
Fantasy and Science Fiction: Writing and Illustrating the Story
June 25 – July 6
This two week intensive, led by acclaimed author James Kennedy, offers students the opportunity to step into the story writing process as writer and illustrator. Students learn all aspects of story creation, receiving targeted instruction in the following academic skills:
· Writing Process: grammar, story development, editing, revising
· Literary Analysis: Short story structure, character development, setting, plot
· Editing and Revising: first draft, re-writing, critiquing, final draft
· Illustration: inspiration, ideation, visual symbolism and narrative development, creative process
· Illustrator’s Toolbox: color, perspective, choice of medium, and visual representation of motion, mood, and character traits
· Project Management and Design: time management, collaborative problem solving, incorporating feedback

Session 2
Making the Music Video: Song Writing and Videography
July 9 – July 20
This two-week intensive, led by New York pop singer/songwriter Myra Flynn and Videographer & Musician/Composer Fred Wilber, engages students in a songwriting and music video project that is designed to foster collaborative communication skills through the creation of a song and music video. Students work as part of a goal oriented, creative team while building the following academic skills:
· Songwriting Basics: lyrics, poetry/rhyme, lyrical vocabulary development
· Fundamentals of Music: rhythm and pacing across a variety of musical genres, computer-based music editing software
· Videography Techniques: stage blocking, narrative storyboarding
· Video Editing and Analysis: continuity, transitions, visual storytelling
· Collaboration: problem solving, peer and teacher mediated critiques, communication skills, team building, planning, organizational strategies
Session 3
Stop Motion Animation: Visual Art in Motion
July 23 – August 3
This two-week intensive, led by experienced Creative Arts Teacher Tracy Goodwin and Visual Artist/Art Therapist Sarah Adamson, combines design and narrative story telling for the creation of stop-motion animated short films. Students create personal video projects that foster the development of the following academic skills:
· Story Development and Storyboarding: sequence and development of character, plot, and setting
· Nonverbal Communication in Narrative Storytelling: gestures, facial expression, setting, world creation, symbolism
· Basics of Sculpture: construction using mixed media
· Science and Engineering Concepts: design and the physiology of motion
· Project and Materials Management: planning and achieving work goals, active problem solving within a creative project, editing in response to peer and teacher critique
