Last Thursday and Friday, I made the trip up to Putney, Vermont to Landmark College’s Guidance Counselor Visit Days. There were approximately 60 guidance counselors from around the U.S. in attendance to take a campus tour and gain an awareness of all Landmark has to offer at the college level for students with learning disabilities. Other relevant presentations included the history of learning disabilities, the new bachelor’s degree program being offered in the fall of 2012, and the summer programs available for high school students. We were able to gain a deeper understanding of the Drake Center for Academic Support, as well as the educational technology that all Landmark students can utilize. The trip was a wonderful experience, and a college I will certainly be recommending to the students of Aaron Academy in the future! Thank you to Landmark for hosting this valuable event!

Finally, the students completed a reflection on their perception of the results and researched one career within their top three clusters. I would like to congratulate the students on a successful Career Week 2012!

The end of March to College culminated with the 9th and 10th graders leading presentations for the 7th and 8th graders about their college visit experiences. The presentation groups were focused by college and included: Pace University, Rutgers University, and New York Institute of Technology. The high school students detailed significant information such as, famous people who have attended each university, number of undergraduate students, and popular majors. The PowerPoint presentations and effort each student group put forth were of the highest quality. Congratulations to the students of Aaron Academy on a successful March to College month!

Blythe Grossberg, Psy.D. provided a breakfast workshop this morning to the Aaron Academy parents on the topic of college planning. Author of the book, Applying to College for Students with ADD or LD, Blythe articulated the difference between the SAT and ACT, as well as the accommodations offered at the college level for students with documented disabilities. The accommodations typically include pre-registration, extended time, and the advisor system to highlight a few. Overall, the parent workshop was quite a success, and Aaron Academy thanks Dr. Grossberg for taking the time to provide this workshop!

The group has also started an internal blog, which allows members of the group to post links of interest, pose questions to the group, and communicate effectively in between each meeting. It is the hope that the new blog will increase the already successful collaboration established during the 2011-2012 school year!
